Benson Chang is the Founder and Chief Executive of TableApp Sdn Bhd. He spent his whole life in the family restaurant business and he has done it all from waiting tables to working in hot kitchens. It was then when he realised he could not answer the phone all the time. Checking emails or the restaurant’s Facebook page was completely out of the question as he was pressed for time. Every missed phone call is a missed customer and he started thinking of ways to remedy this. Instead of having to physically answer the phone and replying emails, he realised it would be easier if everything was done online and the manager only has to check the system to find out how many tables have been reserved. For customers, they get a reply immediately if they have a table and everything is in real time. TableApp is now being used by 115 restaurants mostly in Klang Valley. It provides instant restaurant reservations for free. This means no queue, no wait, and no hassle for customers. For restaurant owners, it means lower labour costs. The startup charges restaurants a monthly maintenance fee, with extra for every successful booking made. Executing the idea was no easy task as there were other app providers in the market that were offering similar purposes. The idea of competing with bigger players such as OpenRice and HungryGoWhere was risky, making Chang shelve his idea temporarily. He left the family business and headed to Taiwan to further his studies at the National Cheng Kung University. During his time there, he came across Eztable, a Taiwan-based online restaurant reservation site. Inspired, brought the concept back to Malaysia. He finally launched the app in June 2013 after 3 months of research and development. The company has snapped up series A funding from Sea Unicorn, 500 Startups, and Kathrein Ventures.
